BattlefieldBadCo2 Interview (10/22/09)
PC Version questions
Interviewer: Outpostgamez.com
Outpostgamez had the opportunity to talk with David Goldfarb, Lead Designer on Battlefield Bad Co 2. We want to thank you for giving OPG the opportunity and for answering our community questions.
1. What can you tell us about Battlefield Bad Co 2, why are you putting it on PC, when you failed to put it on PC with the first BadCo?
a. Battlefield Bad Company 2 is a high-fidelity, blockbuster experience we want to share with as many people as possible! The PC market is a perfect place for BFBC2 both because of the PC platform’s power and because of our origins as a PC game studio. We can’t wait to get it into gamer’s hands and let them experience an all new Battlefield.
2. We are not sure if EA/DICE is aware of how large of a population of women around the world play the battlefield titles, why has EA/DICE excluded a woman playable character, could you tell us why EA/DICE has decided to continue to disenfranchise those woman players?
a. DICE hasn’t made a conscious decision to disenfranchise anyone at all. We are always evaluating and reevaluating the best choices for our titles and we won’t rule anything out.
3. From past Battlefield titles, we have seen map restriction, will we see this in BFBadCo2, or will it be an open environment without restrictions? BFBadCo was an sandbox model that presented new challenges to DICE, can we see this same type of experience in BFBC2? Explain?
a. BC2 is a development of things we learned from BC1 but you can still expect the same awesome sandbox and rock/paper/scissors (infantry/aircraft/armor) gameplay that Battlefield has made famous. We have refined some game modes like Rush and developed a number of new ones which we’ll reveal in the future.
4. The largest complaint in past titles have been, is team killing, spawn camping, what can you tell us you have done to avoid having this problem in BFBadCo2?
a. One of the new additions to BFBC2 is squad play in multiplayer so now you can spawn on one of three teammates to quickly and strategically enter the battle again.
5. What will be the maximum number of players be allowed in game? We have seen some information that it sets it around 24players, can you confirm this and is this for the Xbox, is there another limit for PC?
a. We’ll have more details to share regarding the PC version in the months ahead.
6. What types of environments will we see in BFBadCo2? Could we see a variety of environments/regions such as rain, snow and windstorms?
a. Battlefield Bad Company 2 features several realistic settings from the American continent. The settings for our battles ranges from snow covered picturesque villages in the Alaskan mountains to fierce sandstorms in the Atacama Desert. There are also a few significantly greener pastures where you can wreak havoc with your explosive weapon of choice, but we’re holding on to the details for a little while more.
7. What can you tell us about the Frostbite Engine, was this developed for all titles that carry the battlefield name and was it built by DICE? What will this engine allow in physics and other dynamics that we haven’t seen in past titles?
a. The Frostbite engine was developed by DICE and was first used for Battlefield Bad Company. Its outstanding powers and focus on large open-world environments and full-out destruction allows us to deliver a Battlefield experience more intense than ever before.
8. Patches – We have seen in many games lately the ability of updating as soon as you login, is this something that DICE is looking at for updates?
a. Absolutely. We want to make sure all players have the latest version and are having the best possible experience. Streamlining the update process is a big focus for Bad Company 2.
We would like to thank DAvid Goldfarb, lead designer of Battlefield Bad Co2 and for taking the time answer our questions for our community.
