Battlefield Heroes Expanded FAQ

What’s Battlefield Heroes?
Battlefield Heroes is a new cartoon-style Battlefield game that’s completely free to play. This ‘Play 4 Free’ type of game is new to EA so we’re excited to be leading the charge! It’s going to be available this summer and we’ve worked hard to make the game appeal to both our core fans as well as people new to Battlefield. It’s easy for anyone to pick up and play because of the intuitive controls, fun cartoon art style, and community features, but at the same time there’s real depth and strategy for people like us who are passionate about gaming.

Is this BF3?
No, Battlefield Heroes is not Battlefield 3. Battlefield Heroes is one of many Battlefield games in development by DICE, including Battlefield Bad Company for PS3 and Xbox 360. We have not made any announcements regarding Battlefield 3.

How’s this different than any other game out there?
It’s mainly different because it’s FREE! But this is also a new take on Battlefield games. Battlefield Heroes combines the classic sandbox game play of the Battlefield series, but we are also adding loads of new stuff - a fun, over-the-top setting and art style, simpler controls and interface, and a deep character development and customization system. Because it is download for free and ‘Play 4 Free’, it really changes how we approach game development – we can add new content to the game at any time, we can respond to the community’s feedback with tweaks and changes and we can make the game YOU want to play.

How will advertisements work?

Ben Cousins, senior producer at Dice, told BBC News that no adverts would be appear in the game itself. "They wouldn’t work inside the fictional world. Instead, adverts will appear on the website and the ’front-end’ of the game." -Source

That advertising on Heroes’ online hub and player pages, styled after social networks like Myspace.com, pays for the ongoing project is only part of the story. -Source

Will the game have unlocks and how can you customize your character?
Players have the option of making small "micro payments" to customize their character.

Gamers will be able to buy items which customize their appearance in the world, but will not be able to seek an advantage through buying weapons. -Source

What are the system requirements to run the game?

We’re removing all barriers to entry and we hope there is broader audience for the title. You will be able to play this game on grandma’s laptop. -Ben Cousins, Dice -Source

Will the game be available in stores?
Battlefield Heroes will be available online only.

When is the release date?
Summer 2008

Where can I find more information?
The official website is http://www.battlefield-heroes.com/.

Nailing the look of our Characters

Ben returns this week to talk about the visual style which inspired Battlefield Heroes and how it began its evolution. Read the article and get a peek at the origins of our characters and environments!

The first Step

In most game developer blogs, they tend to talk about what the team is doing in the ‘here and now’. For this one, we’ll be a little bit different and instead take you right back to the beginning of development and introduce you to how a project like this gets off the ground.

Hello Heroes

It’s been an exciting week for the Battlefield Heroes™ team as we announced our game to the world on Monday. It’s been great to see such a large amount of interest and passion from the existing Battlefield community as well as people new to the series. Read on for our plans for this site and a quick rumor squash!

What is Battlefield Heroes?

Looking for more info on the game? The team is proud to announce that Battlefield Heroes™ is the cover story for Games for Windows magazine’s upcoming March issue (on sale February 12 in the US). Pick it up for the first exclusive details on the game!

Battlefield Heroes - Press Release

We are very excited to introduce Battlefield Heroes. It offers fun, accessible action gameplay but with a twist — because it’s free, anyone can try it and because it is proven Battlefield gameplay, we know people will love it. Now, you don’t have to be a hardcore gamer or buy a high-end gaming machine to have fun on the battlefield.

Update Battlefield Heros 03/22/08

Battlefield Heroes features a modified conquest mode providing each team 50 tickets and 2 flags at the start of the round. Killing enemies will reduce tickets and holding more flags than the opposing army will grant a multiplier. It is possible to win by owning more flags than the enemy and by killing less of them. Matchmaking will also be a feature to keep players of the same level together. Players of each level will play with other players within a couple levels of their own. Developers of the game have talked about levels going as high as 40 or 50. The 2 armies are called the National Army and the Royal Army. The game is 3rd person only at this point, but senior producer Ben Cousins has stated if 1st person is really wanted it may be added in at a later date. Spawn times are 5 seconds allowing for less waiting and more action. Players do not pick spawn points since the game has an "Intelligent Spawn System" putting you close to the nearest battle. 2-3 maps will be available on release.

The point system in Battlefield Heroes is being called Metagame (non official name), which allows characters to fight for a territorial positions during each match. The land gained is then recorded as a win for each army, and at the end of the week everything is added up and both armies are given money based on percentage and land conquered.

Like previous Battlefield games Battlefield Heroes also has a class system, but stripped down to 3 basic classes. Commando (light), Soldier (medium), and Gunner (heavy) are the available character options.

Commando

The Commando class is fast moving, and specializes in its stealth tactics as well as backstabs, and sniping. The known weapons of the Commando are a sniper rifle and a knife. Although the sniper rifle does high damage, it does not have a lot of ammo and cannot one-hit kill an enemy. The Commando is a spy type character and has low health compared to the other classes. Special abilities of this class are laying traps, and cloaking.

Soldier

The Soldier, being the medium class is a good all around class and has the power to determine enemy’s location via a special ability called "See-the-Enemy". This ability outlines nearby opponents even if the enemy is behind a wall. This lasts for 10 seconds and then takes 30 seconds to recharge. The only known weapon the Soldier carries is the submachine Gun. Other abilities the Soldier can have are incendiary rounds, health boost (heals allies around you), throw multiple grenades.

Gunner

The Gunner is the heavy of the 3 classes, which means he is the slowest moving, but the best armed. He wields rapid-fire machine guns, rocket launchers, and flame throwers are a possibility for feature updates. Special features include the ability to throw multiple grenades, and return masses of live grenades at the enemy.

Abilities

Abilities are special powers that each player gets when they level up. Known abilities at this time are Bomb Bouquet ability (non official name, allows 15 grenades to be thrown at a time), I Eat Grenades ability (throw back 7 grenades at once), Stun Grenade ability (Flings tanks into the air), Life-Points Boost, and Incendiary Ammo.

Healing is by a ’blast heal’, a soldier ability that heals the player and any friendlies nearby. You also have a bandage which restores less health and only works for your own character. Using the bandage when you are not injured boosts your health over 100. There is no medic class for this reason.

Just as all games in the Battlefield series, all players will be equipped with parachutes to help when falling from airplanes.

Achievement System

Achievements work by a mission system allowing you to choose a badge you want and you then go on a mission that will get you that badge. The more you play the game the more points you get and your level increases. The more points allow you to buy better clothing items, but nothing that will give you an advantage on the battlefield.

Items

There will be two types of items: visual items and convenience items. Visual items allows customization of 12 different aspects of your character: Head, face, facial hair, helmet, jacket, boot, neck, chest, hand, waist, leg, and feet. Additional items available for purchase are eye patches, badges, hats, boots, helmets, goggles, belts, and gloves. Convenience items will allow players to gain extra experience points.

Weapons

There is not much information in regards to additional weapons. However there have been mentions of the sticky bomb. These are known to be extremely effective against tanks.

Closed Beta Information (05/04/08)

On May 6, 2008 the first phase of the game release was an invitation only closed beta and the invitations were given to professional beta testers only. More information about the open beta and signing up will be released in the coming weeks prior to the closed beta’s release.  Following the select beta testers, an immense website rush caused eager readers to be attracted to the website and caused the site to crash for a short time. Once the website was placed back up it was revealed that third-party professional testers are trying the game at this current time, where in short future an open beta test will reveal the attempt of several beta stages. One being the main onlook of having players download the game and whether the servers provided can handle the intense use. The current closed beta players are under a non disclosure agreement, disallowing them from releasing information about the beta.

At this time a select few game retailers are giving off an incling that the game will be available around Q3 (July/August/September). The official site has now enabled users to log-in and post comments and change their in-game name at this time using their EA.com account.
